1 Corinthians 1:26-31

26 For you see your calling, brethren, that not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called. 27 But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty; 28 and the base things of the world and the things which are despised God has chosen, and the things which are not, to bring to nothing the things that are, 29 that no flesh should glory in His presence. 30 But of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God - and righteousness and sanctification and redemption - 31 that, as it is written, ''He who glories, let him glory in the Lord.'' NKJV

I feel most of their problems can easily be summarized in one word; ''pride.'' Pride can be a good thing but it can also be very harmful if it prevents us from effectively serving the Lord either as individual believers or as a congregation. The Corinthian believers had allowed their pride in their spiritual gifts and their place in the church to take the place of their commitment to Christ.

There are those churches that never seem to have problems. On the other hand, there are some churches that seem to always be in a constant state of turmoil and strife. If you dig deep enough you'll discover that personal pride is almost always at the heart of church strife. Don't be one of those churches this year. This year make sure Christ is at the very center of all you do and say. Find your center and you'll have the kind of year you can look back on with pleasure and be proud of.
