INTRODUCTION

Last week, we finished a study on the Fruit of the Spirit.

- I found myself, as I prepared those messages... Being convicted over and over again.
- I want to be more like Jesus... And I realize I have a long way to go in becoming loving, joyful, peaceful... Like he was.
- So in some ways, that study was painful. It exposed all these areas in my life where I feel weak. Encouraged me to rely on the Holy Spirit as I seek to become more like Jesus.

This week, we are starting a teaching series on the Life of David.
If studying The Fruit of the Spirit seemed like a reminder to you of all the ways you fall short, then studying David's life may be a breath of fresh air.

- Because he is a man, who like us, was complicated.
- He had moments of love, gentleness, patience...
- We're told he had a heart after God.
- But he also has moments of profound failure.

So... We can relate... If we can find ourselves in this story of David... Relate to him... Then, we can find the God that David loved so much.

I want to draw your attention to a resource that might be helpful during this study.

But today, we have to setup the scene... Prequel... The time in Israel in David.
- So consider this the introduction to David's life, before we begin studying David's life.

Before David arises on the scene in Scripture...
God chooses the people Israel... ''My people. Set apart for my purposes.'' Light to the Nations.

Constantly provides for them... Protects them.
- Delivers them from slavery in Egypt.
- Protects them against numerous threats.
- Supernaturally feeds them in the dessert.
- Finally establishes them in the Promised Land and says, from this place, you are to serve God, honor God, care for one another...
- Demonstrate that Yahweh is the true God, and be a Light to the Nations, so that all would be drawn to God.
