1 Samuel 16

INTRODUCTION:

At every stage of my life, I have always sought to prove/ distinguish myself. I've wanted to show that I was special.

- High School: Athletics/ Popularity
- College: Academics.
- Now: Career - I want to be seen as good at my job.

All my life I have wanted to show that I am special... That I am not ordinary.

I would guess that many of you are the same way... Today, I want us to see that ordinary is okay. Because God is not concerned with how impressive we appear to be.

1 Samuel 16

At the end of chapter 15, Samuel is grieving because Saul has turned out to be a very disappointing king.

- The vision that Samuel had for a King was not coming to fruition.
- Saul was not standing for justice. He was not siding with the poor and oppressed. He was not faithful to his people or his promises. He was not faithful to God.
- Samuel had a vision of a king that would use his power to bless the people. Not take from them.
- He had a vision for a king that would not demand allegiance from his people... But earn it.
- But in the end, Saul was not faithful to anybody but himself.
- God rejects him as king.
- Samuel is depressed. His high hopes for Israel have been shattered.

But God is gracious... He comes to Samuel for comfort.
- When we are faithless. God is faithful.

- God says... ''I have ''seen'' a King.''

When Samuel looks on Eliab... God says... ''You aren't seeing, Samuel.''
vv. 6-7. God tells Samuel, ''You are looking, but you are not seeing.''
