1 SAMUEL 17:3-54
If you are just joining us, we are studying through the life of King David. Today, we come to perhaps the most familiar story in David's life. David defeating Goliath.
- We are going to walk through this account. We're not going to read all 52 verses, but there will be a lot of Scripture this morning.
[3] And the Philistines stood on the mountain on the one side, and Israel stood on the mountain on the other side, with a valley between them. [4] And there came out from the camp of the Philistines a champion named Goliath of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span.
There is some scholarly disagreement over exactly how tall Goliath was.
- 6'9'' or 9'6''. Either way... Goliath is a big guy, and nobody wants to fight him.
[8] He stood and shouted to the ranks of Israel, ''Why have you come out to draw up for battle? Am I not a Philistine, and are you not servants of Saul? Choose a man for yourselves, and let him come down to me. [9] If he is able to fight with me and kill me, then we will be your servants. But if I prevail against him and kill him, then you shall be our servants and serve us.''
Representative Warfare - Two fought to determine the entire outcome.
[10] And [Goliath] said, ''I defy the ranks of Israel this day. Give me a man that we may fight together.'' [11] When Saul and all Israel heard these words of [Goliath], they were dismayed and greatly afraid.

[16] For forty days [Goliath] came forward and took his stand, morning and evening.
In the meantime...
- Jesse sends his youngest son David to get some food for his big brothers who are on the battle lines.
- Once again, Jesse is treating his youngest son David like a water boy, not someone who is to be a king.
- David gets there and starts asking questions about Goliath. ''What's the deal with this giant?''
- Eliab (his oldest brother) says, ''Get out ...
