2 Samuel 7
When I think about my Christian faith. I often think of it in terms of what I have accomplished for God. What I have done for him.
- Perhaps you are the same... You measure the strength of your faith, by how much you've prayed in the past week. How generous you are with your time or your money. Whether or not you engaged in that bad habit you hate so much.
- As the pastor of this church, I often think about what I am building for God. (As if I am the one building this church anyway).
- But if the church is growing.... Conflict is at a minimum. I feel like I have offered something presentable to God, and that he must somehow be very pleased with me.
- Maybe you think that if you read your Bible on the train everyday or you avoid sin patterns... You are in good standing with God.
Our Scripture today (2 Samuel 7) actually gives us a peek into the heart and mind of God and what we see is that it isn't our performance for God that makes him pleased with us. It isn't what we accomplish or build for him... Or present to him... But rather what pleases him is that we know him and are known by him.
NARRATIVE
We are studying the life of David. For the last several weeks we've seen him on the run from maniac King Saul who is trying to kill him...
- But our passage today pickups after Saul has died... And now David is finally King of Israel.
[7:1] Now when the king lived in his house and the LORD had given him rest from all his surrounding enemies, [2] the king said to Nathan the prophet, ''See now, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwells in a tent.'' [3] And Nathan said to the king, ''Go, do all that is in your heart, for the LORD is with you.''
David is at complete rest, at this point in time. Goliath is dead. Saul is dead. David is finally king... And David is now able to feel fully at peace.
