Galatians 4:1-20

INTRODUCTION: Russell Moore wrote an excellent book years ago titled ''Adopted for Life.''
In the opening chapter, he tells the story of when he adopted his two sons.

He had just come home from Russia where he had just adopted his two boys... They were a couple of weeks apart in age.
- A woman comes up he and his wife and says, ''So, Are they brothers?''
- He replied. ''Yes, they are now... They are my sons. Of course, they are brothers.''
- She says, ''I know... But are they really brothers?''
- He clenched his jaw....
- ''Yes. Now they are both our children, so now they are really brothers.''
-With that the woman rolled her eyes... And said ''You know what I mean'' before walking off.
- What she wanted to know was... Do these boys share a common biological ancestry. A common bloodline... DNA...
- ''Are they real brothers? Or just adopted brothers (as if family through adoption was somehow less of a family).

Moore says, he also used to get asked the question ''So, do you ever want to have children of your own?''
-The assumption is that somehow... An adopted child is less of a child. And that the most important trait in what makes a family is a common bloodline.

As we have been studying, the book of Galatians... Perhaps you've realized that this is precisely the question being asked in churches throughout the first century.... ''What makes a real child of God?''
- The belief being touted during this time was that God loved all people.... But those who obeyed the Jewish law... Those who were circumcised... Those were his real children.

With this in view... The Apostle Paul writes these words....
[26] for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. [27] For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. [28] There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one ...
