Jonah 1:17-2:10
INTRODUCTION: Last week, we began a study on the Book of Jonah. If you were here, we looked at chapter one and drew a parallel to the way that Jonah disobeyed and ran from the will of God to the fact that we often, disobey and run from the will of God for our lives.
The point I was trying to make is that when we read the story of Jonah, for it to have its fullest impact on our lives, we must be humble enough to recognize and admit that we are very much like Jonah.
Yom Kippur - Day of Atonement.... Jewish people will go the temple in the evening.
As a way of understanding their sin, but also recognizing God's faithfulness to save and restore sinners... Jewish people will read the entire book of Jonah, and then say together ''We are Jonah.''
Jonah has always been a book intended to diagnose our own hearts and lives... And remind us of the faithfulness of God.
That is what I want us to see as we study this book. Jonah's story is our story. We run from God, God pursues us... We are unfaithful, God is faithful.
Today, we are in chapter 2... This is a story of repentance.
As you consider your own life... Perhaps, like Jonah, there is something in your life you need to confess, repent of, and turn away from.
Racism (That is causing you to empathize with white supremacists in Charlottesville right now)... Maybe there is an affair that is looming with someone at the office...
Something in your own heart: rivalry, pettiness, jealousy, bitterness
Maybe you are not a Xian, and it is time for you to yield to the Spirit of God calling you to follow him.
As you will see today in our text... It is God's kindness that leads us to repentance.
This text beckons to make a decision. To move toward the life that God wants for us.
[17] And the LORD appointed a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.
Now... This part ...
