Matters of the Heart
Series: Jonah
Will McGee
Jonah 4
INTRODUCTION: Everyone loves a good story....
- It's why we spend $35billion a year at the movies.
- $27billion on books every year.
But we love for our stories to have happy endings.
- It's why we cheer Anna jumps in Elsa's place.... And rescues her with ''an act of true love.''
- It's why we tear up, when Rudy sacks the QB and is carried on his teammates shoulders off the field.
- We love when the guy gets the girl, the team wins the game, or when the monster is defeated. We love happy endings. When the Prodigal returns home.
- It's why my mother-in-law binges on Hallmark Channel at Xmas time.
It's why we hate when stories have bad/frustrating endings....
- Old Yeller - My parents showed me that when I was young... Do you know how messed up I am because of that movie?
- Titanic - There was room on the door, Rose!!!!
Or we get frustrated when the stories don't resolve
- No Country for Old Men, Sorpranos.... and you can argue with me all you want, but the ending to LOST was the most disappointing series finale ever.
Today, we come to the ending of the book of Jonah. Summary:
Ch. 1 - God calls Jonah to go to Nineveh and announce God's judgement on them, and call them to turn to God and be saved.
- This was a city that was known throughout the world for its viciousness and bloodthirst.
- But Jonah refuses to go-Flees on a boat in the other direction. God sends a storm, Jonah is thrown overboard, swallowed by a fish.
Ch. 2 - God shows Jonah Grace... Spares his life Jonah prays, tells God he is sorry.... Throws himself on God's mercy. God gets him out of the fish.
Ch. 3 - Jonah goes to Nineveh... Preaches and the whole city turns to God.
- Don't underestimate how amazing this is. God uses a rebellious prophet to bring about the greatest spiritual awakening in history.
- An entire city, royalty included, (Completely deserving of God's wrath and jus ...
