Colossians 3:9-12
INTRODUCTION
Mark Twain said, ''Clothes make the man.'' He added... ''Naked people have little or no influence on society.''
You can tell a lot about a person by the way that they dress.
- Maybe their hobbies (Skateboarders dress a certain way...)
- Maybe their profession (White coat... Doctor/pharmacist)
- Boots, flannel, thick beard... Lumberjack... Or just a Williamsburg Hipster.
- I saw an article on NPR's music website a while back....
- Quiz (Guess the genre of music based on a picture of the artist's shoes).
In Colossians 3, The Apostle Paul uses the metaphor of clothing to call us to a life of holiness....
- To walk away from a life of sin... And follow Jesus on the path to life.
[9] seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices [10] and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator. . .
[12] Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, here is our focus for today [gentleness], and patience,

The point is this: When I dressed up like the king... I acted like the king. I took on his character... His attributes.
If you will dress up like Jesus... You will begin acting like him.
Dress like the king... You will act like the king.
We have been studying the Fruit of the Spirit. Today, we look at Gentleness.
When it comes to the virtues listed in the ''Fruit of the Spirit'' in Galatians 5.... ''Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, and self-control.''
- The point is not to develop these traits so that we become more pleasant people. Or more self-fulfilled. ''Be a better you.''
- The point is to, by the Spirit of God, we ''put on'' these characteristics so that we will become more like Jesus.
