1 Peter 1:1-2
INTRODUCTION
Today, we are beginning a sermon study on the letter of 1 Peter.
- We will study this letter all the way up until the Advent season.
- We're calling this series ''Faith on the Margins''
Because, in many ways... While Christianity is still statistically the largest religion in the United States, At least in terms of how people identify themselves... It feels, at times, like Christianity is being pushed to the margins of culture.
- We're not persecuted with violence, like so many of our brothers and sisters around the world.
- But there is a growing sense in which it feels like Christianity not only losing influence in the culture around us, but sometimes it feels like we're being pushed aside.
- We are living in what sociologists are calling a ''Post-Christian Society''
- Meaning, that while there are still many remnant threads of Christianity in our cultural fabric (_______) . The beliefs of Christianity are increasingly being dismissed or at, at times, just simply not considered.
Before moving to New York. I pastored in Alabama. In Calhoun County (which according to the most recent census data 2010---is the most churched country in America).
- When I was a pastor in that area, being a Xian leader carried with it a certain amount of social capital. Cultural cachet.
- It was a regular occurrence for my dinner to be paid for, when someone saw me out at a restaurant. I rarely paid for coffee at the local coffee shop.
- I was asked to pray at community events. People sought my opinion on matters relating to public life.
- Christianity was at the center of public life.
Then, I moved to Brooklyn.
- Now, when I meet new friends at a coffee shop, in my building, or in the park...
- I dread when people ask me the question, ''What do you do for a living?''
- Because when I say that I am a pastor... I'm met usually a response of apathy. ...
