INTRODUCTION

Elect Exiles (foreigners, aliens, strangers, temporary residents). This is what Peter refers to the Christians scattered about the Roman Empire.

They are living in places like Pontius, Galatia, Cappadocia....

These are Christians (most of them Jewish) living far from their homelands. In a Roman society that is completely culturally different from them.

Many of you in this church, came to this country as immigrants.

Or others of you, like me, come from parts of the country completely different culturally from New York City.

The rest of you, may have grown up in this city, but you've seen things change so much over the years, and you almost feel like stranger in your own neighborhood.

This is what it feels like to be a stranger, exile, alien....

When your values, culture, traditions, language, and history... are vastly different from the majority of those around you.


Where we come from and who our family is, whether we like it or not, affects who we are.

Your personality, in many ways, is a sum of all the significant people in your life + the places you've lived.

But something often happens when you are very different from the majority of the culture. When you are a foreigner or stranger.

You will be tempted to take on the characteristics, language... Even beliefs and values of the culture around you.

This isn't always bad. It's often called being ''cultured.''

But sometimes it causes us to forget where we are from and who we are.

I have several 3rd generation immigrant friends. Who can't speak the language of their parents... Their parents wanted them to succeed in America, so they only spoke English at home.... Now my friends are 30-40 years old and regret that they have little connection to their heritage.
