INTRODUCTION

''How Should We Then Live''

This is the question that Christians have asked through centuries.

When we reflect on the grace that God has shown us in Christ, and when we consider our historical and cultural moment... How should we then live?

In response to God's mercy... And inside the context of the culture we live in... How are we to live? As followers of Jesus?

This is the question that Peter is addressing to his readers in this letter. His readers were exiled Christians scattered throughout the Roman world.

Considered strange by the culture around them... Under oppression. Fearing persecution.

These Christians were trying to learn what it looked like to follow Jesus at the margins of society. How should we then live?

When you speak of being on the margins... I think nearly every group (whether political, religious, racial, sexual, ideological) feels at the margins of our culture today.

Western culture is so diverse... And so politically divided... That no one really seems to feel completely at home in our society.

If you ask a political liberal today, do they feel like they belong in this country... They'll say, ''I don't know. This country seems to be going in the opposite direction of progress.''

But if you ask a political conservative... They will say, ''This country seems to be going in the opposite direction of our values and traditions.''

Whether we are debating immigration reform, transgender bathrooms, or NFL players kneeling during the anthem, or the President's tweets... Everyone appears to be so perplexed that half of the country doesn't agree with us.

In our frustration, we begin to see ourselves as marginalized... And we are tempted to look at those who disagree with us as our enemies... Instead of engaging... We villainize each other, discredit each other, and shout each other down.
