Ecclesiastes 12
INTRODUCTION
Ecclesiastes 12 - One more time, will you imagine with me... (This image we have considered as we study the book of Ecclesiastes). That we are on a front porch. Sitting in rocking chairs... Having coffee with the wise King Solomon as he tells us about life...
He knows that we are young... Looking for our purpose in life...
So he tells us his story of his own search for meaning... Let me tell you how it went for me.
We are little surprised to find that he has lived a very full life...
We listen as he tells us of all the ideas he has explored... The books he has read. Classes he's taken.
He tells us about the jokes he has told and heard... Cheesy jokes. Dirty Jokes.
Times he hung out with celebrities.
About all the alcohol he has drank... The parties he threw.
The art he has created... And enjoyed... The architecture he has built.
The vacations he's taken. Places he's seen. Beauty he has taken in.
The money he has made... And spent... All the trinkets he bought...
Maybe he laughs a little at how excited he was over something that now seems obsolete... (Sega Genesis Now kids have better games on their phones - They don't have to blow on cartridges).
He tells us about his first cell phone. It came in a brief case... Cost $14/minute.
He tells us about the trends he has seen come and go.
He tells us about the women he has been with... The fame and popularity that he once had... The applause has received.
And... As he tells us this... We are a little confused because to us it sounds like he has lived a full life... But there is a sadness in his tone... He takes a deep breath... Exhales...
He tells us that all the money... music... art... women...
It was fun... But the enjoyment of those things didn't last long... It didn't give me that thing that he craved the most. Didn't cure the restlessness in my soul.
