INTRODUCTION

A couple years ago, Cadillac aired a commercial advertising one of their cars during the 2014 Winter Olympics.

In the opening frame, there is man in the backyard of his mansion standing over a swimming pool. With a really smug demeanor he says, 'Why do we work so hard? For this? For stuff?''

- ''Other countries, they work,'' he says. ''They slowly stroll home. They stop by the cafe. They take August off. Off.''
- ''Why aren't we like that? Because we're crazy, driven, hard-working believers, that's why.''
- ''The stuff? That's the upside to all the work... And we have it because we only take one week off in August.''

In a one-minute advertisement, Cadillac showed us the spirit of 21st century America.
- Work. Accumulate. Hustle. Don't slow down, or you'll be left behind.
- There is probably no city in the world that perpetuates this way of life more than ours.
- If I were to guess that advertisement was drawn up in a board room off Madison Ave.

After this commercial aired, Huff Post published an article, ''Cadillac Made a Commercial About the American Dream... And It's a Nightmare.''

One of the things that the church of Jesus is equipped and uniquely called to do is to be what Gabe Lyons calls a counter-culture for the common good... To show our city a fuller way of life.

Today, I want us to look at an often forgotten prescription and commandment that God has given us to show our culture a better way... That is rest. Or as the Scriptures call it Sabbath.
- This is something that New Yorkers long for... But we can't seem to find it. We are an overworked/exhausted people here in New York. We are busy, tired, and exhausted.

This is not the life that God envisions for the people he loves.
