Mark 5:21-43
INTRODUCTION
One of the reasons that I love the gospels is that they are written as a story.
- They are biographies. But they are written in narrative form.
- That's great because the Bible speaks to us on a number of levels.
- You have the law which tell us how to live as the people of God.
- You have the epistles which propositional truths. They teach us theology.
- But the narratives (the gospels in particular) help us feel these things.
- We don't just read propositional theological truths, but we feel them.
- We get swept up into them.
- The late Calvin Miller, ''If you want people to remember something, it must begin with once upon a time.''
Today's passage is like this...
This text tells us a story... (A story told in all 3 synoptic gospels). But it sweeps us up into some really beautiful theological truths. There is so much theology here... So much hope... That can transform our lives... If we can just grasp what this story is trying to tell us.
- Let me just say that this morning will be a little different... No application points... Just a story... That I want you to get swept up in.
- Because I think if this story can enchant you... Draw you in... It can forever transform your life. It will give you a greater picture of just how good the Good News of Jesus really is...
- If you are not a Xian... This story is the heart of God.
21 When Jesus had again crossed over by boat to the other side of the lake, a large crowd gathered around him while he was by the lake. 22 Then one of the synagogue leaders, named Jairus, came, and when he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet. 23 He pleaded earnestly with him, ''My little daughter is dying. Please come and put your hands on her so that she will be healed and live.'' 24 So Jesus went with him.
-So, Jairus approaches Jesus.
- He was ruler of the synagogue... Meaning he was a very high rank ...
