Mark 7:1-23

INTRODUCTION

Every culture. Every person/group of people have value systems that we use to determine what is acceptable... What is moral... What is proper/appropriate.

-Naturally, we tend, even in a postmodern-do-whatever-works-for-you society, to evaluate others based on how they perform under our value systems.

I can give several examples.

-One of my friends lives in South Asia. In the country he lives, people eat with their hands... Finally, he couldn't take it... He had to know... Why do you guys eat with your hands... Why not use forks/utensils? It's not as messy/clean.

-I've been to your country... You go to restaurants and eat with forks and spoons that hundreds of other strangers have put in their mouths.

-You're calling us gross? You guys have it wrong.

I think of religion. Even more specifically within Christianity. It is not uncommon to see a church, denomination, an individual, to have a set of rules and values (that in their mind makes one acceptable to God). And then place that on everyone else.

My father-in-law told me a story of one of his friends who moved to Papa New Guinea to be a teacher there. He was a Xian, so he looked for a church.
-He found one... The pastor was preaching a sermon that day on leg covering ...
