Proverbs 22:1
There are two things hard for me to remember. One of them is names. I have already forgotten the other.
What's in a name? Relationship is in a name. You are someone's son or daughter. You are someone's wife or husband. You are someone's friend.
Reputation is also in a name. The scripture says, ''A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favor rather than silver or gold.'' People with great riches can help feed the poor. People with a good name can win others to Jesus. Ecclesiastes 7:1 says, ''A good name is better than precious ointment, and the day of death than the day of one's birth.'' Ointment was used for special occasions like anointing a king or priest. It was a time of celebration. A good name is not securely established until the day of one's death. Someone who still lives may yet lose his reputation.
Job was distraught because he lost his good name. One must do something to gain a large estate. One must be something to have a good name.
It is interesting to put faces to names. Paul did that in his letters. I want us to consider two of Paul's associates, Timothy and Demas.
Timothy teaches us that no one gets beyond his weaknesses. Timothy was a great friend of the apostle Paul. He was a faithful minister of the gospel. But he was not without his weaknesse ...
