I was a pastor on the Gulf Coast for fifteen years. One of the things I had to try to get accustomed to while I was there was a hurricane. I confess to you I never did get comfortable when a hurricane was bouncing around in the Gulf.
Now, since I grew up in Tippah County, I was practically raised in a storm house. We lived in tornado alley, so it shouldn't have been such a stretch for me to deal with a different kind of storm. At least with a hurricane one can have as much as a week to get ready for it. However, I think it was all that anticipation that just killed me.
Several storms came our way in my tenure on the coast. They were not so bad; however, they were a prelude to one of the worst storms that ever hit an American coast.
I went from being a pastor to a CEO overnight. Our church was known as a POD, (place of distribution). We had over two hundred people living in the church and thousands of security people and volunteers coming from all over America. We flushed commodes for two weeks from water we had collected in our baptistery.
