When the Load Is Too Heavy

Exodus 18:17-27
There was a sailor boarding a ship with two anchors on his shoulders. He fell overboard and went under two times. He yelled out, ''If someone doesn't help me, I am going to drop these anchors.'' He had a load that he could not or would not turn loose.
The Bible is up-to-date. It is not just a relic of the past. It is not a book of pious platitudes about pious people. The pressures and problems that confronted the people of God are unchanging through the centuries. Things that happened centuries ago could have happened yesterday. It is like current events.
Here is the question I have for you this morning. In the life and progress of the Kingdom of God are we part of the burden; or are we under the burden? Do you add to the weight of the task; or do you lighten the load. I guess we would say today, are you an asset or a liability.
I believe there is guidance in this text that will help us on the road of life.
1. THERE IS A LIMIT TO WHAT ONE PERSON CAN DO.
Clint Eastwood in one of his Dirty Harry movies said, ''A man has to know his limitations.''
-Someone once asked this question: Which is the greater man, the man who can do the work of ten men, or the man who can get ten men to work? Probably the latter man is greater. This is a man who has learned to delegate the task. He is not too superior or proud to enlist help.
-Jesus chose 12 apostles to assist him in his earthly ministry. In the early church, the leadership led in the election of deacons to assist them in their work. This is a biblical concept. Today, too few people are doing too much of the work.
-Jethro was the father-in-law of Moses. He also has two other names. Jethro saw that Moses was overloaded and gave him some good advice.
1. There is a limit of time.
We all have 168 hours in the week. When you take eight for working and eight for sleeping each day; and then throw in other necessary things, it stands to reason ...
