How to Have a Happy New Year
Rex Yancey
Philippians 3:12-14
The one word that probably describes the so-called American dream is the word success. Everybody wants to be successful, and they want to be associated with success.
Somebody has said ''Success is something everybody wants to buy but nobody wants to pay for. Someone else has said that ''a successful executive in business is one who can delegate all the responsibility, shift all the blame and get all the credit.''
Someone else said that ''Success is the ability to shoot the bull, pass the buck, and make seven copies of everything.
Wouldn't it be nice if we could just make a resolution and be successful? You know that resolutions go in one year and out the other!
J. C. Penny said, ''Give me a stock clerk with a goal and I'll show you a man who will make history; show me a man without a goal and I'll show you a stock clerk.''
I want us to look at five words this morning that will lead us to happiness.
1. CONVERSION
Paul talked about the gains he had made in life before he met Christ. He had the kind of resume that impressed his Jewish audience. But then he writes, ''But whatever things were gain to me, those things I have counted as loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them but rubbish so that I may gain Christ.''
A. Christ is superior to things.
Christ is life's greatest gain. He is superior to all things. Life without Christ is a conglomeration of things. One thing after another, things to buy, to do, have, to work on, and work with.
-An Overseas oil company tried to hire one of our missionaries several years ago. The salary was lucrative; however, the missionary turned it down. The oil executive asked, ''Is the salary not big enough?'' The missionary said, ''It is not that the salary is too small, it's that the job is too small.'' Nothing can be added to the things of this world ...
