Introduction

Tomorrow, January 22, will mark the 45th anniversary of the Supreme Court case decision of Roe v. Wade. Since that date it is estimated that there have been around 60 million abortions in the United States. Think about that for a second and let it sink in; 60 million unborn children killed. That is roughly the same as the population of Great Britain today, completely gone and killed. And so, for years many pastors across the United States have sought to preach about the sanctity of life on the third Sunday of January. It's an opportunity for us to be educated on the matter concerning the biblical teaching about life in the womb and for us to consider what we as citizens of the Kingdom of God should strive to protect.

And so, that's what I will attempt to do this morning, to call our attention to what the Bible teaches concerning the sanctity of life. I want to do so with grace and love, recognizing that if the statistics are true then there may even be this morning among us someone who has had an abortion. Let me just say if that's you, it is not my purpose to make you feel guilty or dirty. Abortion is a sin but all our sin has been atoned for in full through the cross of Jesus Christ. And so while we will be clear as to what the Bible teaches, no one is going to try to make you feel bad or will look down their self-righteous nose at you. If anyone feels that inclination this morning to try to make the woman who has had an abortion feel bad, well then let he or she without sin cast the first stone.

Now understand, though, that when I say I intend to preach on the sanctity of life, that is indeed what I intend to preach upon. For if we say we uphold the sanctity of life, then we need to be consistent.
