1 Corinthians 11:2-16
Can anybody tell me what these things have in common: (Pictures on screen) Jet-powered tennis shoes, dehydrated boulders, Jet-propelled pogo stick, and a do-it-yourself tornado kit? They were all crazy inventions used by Wile E. Coyote in his ongoing attempt to catch the Road Runner. These were highly creative, yet wildly impractical ways to try and get the job done.
Do you remember from what company he ordered these contraptions? ACME. It stood for 'A Company that Makes Everything'. As a kid, I knew every time Wile E. Coyote opened up a package from ACME something big was about to happen. Of course, you never knew if that something big was going to blow up in his face, squash him flat, or actually work for once, but whatever happened, you knew it would be big.
Let me warn you our text today, 1 Corinthians 11:2-16, is kind of like a package from ACME. But instead of the label A-C-M-E, I think some preachers have stamped A-A-A-C on it for ''Avoid At All Cost.'' It's a tough passage. I'll bet not more than ten people in here have ever heard a sermon from this text. And after I'm done with it, you might wish you still hadn't heard a sermon from it. We will see.
But even though this is a difficult text, we're not going to avoid it, but dig into it. I've noticed that God often reveals big truths when we dig into difficult texts. It might blow up in our face, or squash us flat, but something good might just happen. You never know. So, let's see. (READ TEXT)
How many of you are thinking what in the world is that about?! Yeah, me too. I can't wait to hear what I have to say about it. There's a lot about heads and hair in here. I almost called this sermon 'Hair: the Long and the Short of It'. But I knew you think 'what does this guy know about hair'?
Now, if we're going to understand this there are two vital things we have to keep in mind.
