Let's open God's Word together to 1 Corinthians 5. Have you ever been reading Scripture and thought to yourself, ''I can't believe THAT'S in the Bible''? One of the benefits of preaching through a book of the bible chapter-by-chapter, verse-by-verse is that it forces me as a pastor and us as a church to study and talk on texts and topics that we wouldn't normally choose. But if God put it in His book it must be for our benefit, right?
1 Corinthians 5 is one of those chapters of the bible you read what the people did and say 'really'? Then you see what the Lord did and say 'wow'. I almost entitled this sermon 'Sex, Stepmom, and Satan'. I mean, this is wild stuff. But while the content of this chapter isn't typical; I believe it can be immensely helpful. So, without further adieu, let's read it and be taught by it. (READ 1 Cor. 5:1-8)
Paul has spent four chapters carefully laying the foundation for what he's going to say and why he's going to say it. Finally, in chapter 5 he begins to focus on his primary purpose for writing. He begins shedding light on a series of sins happening within the Corinthian church that need their immediate attention. And the first one he addresses is a doozy. He says, ''It is actually reported (means 'commonly', widespread, not a secret, everyone knows) that there is sexual immorality among you, and such sexual immorality as is not even named among the Gentiles-that a man has his father's wife!''
The first sin on the docket to be dealt with is sexual immorality. It's the word porneia in the Greek. It's where we get our word pornography. It's illicit, unbiblical, ungodly, sexual sin. It's an inclusive word, not an exclusive one. It includes sexual sin of the body and mind. It includes adultery, homosexuality, lust, fornication, etc.
