Now as you're turning to Exodus 3, let me welcome you to this study of the names of God! In this study, we're taking a look at some of the names of God and after every name, we're stepping back and saying:
What A Wonderful Name!
Every name God bears is a wonderful name and do you know what makes them so wonderful? Here's what makes them all so wonderful: Every name He bears is a blessing that He shares. Every name reveals to us His not only His character, but His activity; who He is and what He does!
And we've discovered that by understanding more about His names, that our worship is strengthened, our walk is strengthened and our witness is strengthened.
Now we began this series in the book of beginnings, in Genesis 1.1 where we find the first name God bears: ''In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.'' Do you remember the translator's code for ''God?'' That's the name Elohim. What a wonderful Name! Elohim, the Creator God, the Compassionate God, the Covenant God! And we're going to see more from Elohim in this study tonight.
Last week we were introduced to the second name: Yahweh or Jehovah. The first time we find it is in Genesis 2.4 in connection with the creation account ''.... That the LORD God made the earth and the heavens.''
In case you missed last week, you need to know that when you come across the name LORD throughout the Old Testament, in all capital letters, that's the translator's way of letting you know it's the name Yahweh or Jehovah, which speaks of His holiness!
Psalm 99.9, ''Exalt the LORD our God, and worship at His holy hill; for the LORD your God is holy.''
In fact, this name was so sacred and holy that starting around 200 A.D. the Jews stopped pronouncing it in fear of profaning the name of God. And keep in mind that there are no vowels in the Hebrew language, only consonants. You say, ''Then how would they know h ...
