Back in 2000 a new Spiderman movie franchise was born starring Toby Maguire. While it did not originate with the Spiderman franchise, there is a certain line, from that first movie, that has become iconic and synonymous with the super-hero flick. Peter Parker's uncle Ben, tells him ''With great power comes great responsibility.''

That little saying contains a great deal of truth. We could also say, ''With great privilege comes great responsibility.'' Whenever we are entrusted with something of worth or power, there comes with it an inherit amount of responsibility and accountability.

At every stage of life there have been certain rites of passage we could not wait to get to. Every time we attained a new privilege we felt a sense of pride and accomplishment

For a little boy, it may have been that first pocket knife or bb gun. Then it became their first gun or the first time they were given permission to hunt or take the boat out by themselves. It could have been the first-time dad let them use his tools and then power-tools.

I remember when mom allowed me to use the gas stove to cook instead of just the oven or skittle. Over time, I was allowed to use grease and fry things (back when you scooped it out of the can and dropped it in the pan instead of pouring it out of a bottle).

We all know the thrill of being able to drive on our own and stay out until curfew.

Each step carried new freedom and opportunities, but they were also accompanied by instruction, guidelines and cautions. Each new privilege, while exciting and liberating, also brought added risk to you and the people around you. Because of that, each new privilege and measure of autonomy that was granted brought with it responsibility and accountability. If we did not operate within the guidelines and behave properly mom and dad were certain to take them away or limit them.
