The Christmas Blues (2 of 4)
Series: A Simple Christmas
Tony Thomas
Luke 1:68-79
I read about a church that put on an annual Christmas play that was produced by the Jr. High Sunday School class. A narrator retold the Christmas story from the Bible. The non-speaking parts included a donkey, a flock of sheep, and three camels. The speaking parts went to shepherds, angels, wise men, and, of course, Mary, Joseph and the Inn Keeper.
Two boys wanted the part of Joseph. Why? Because Mary was the best-looking girl in the 8th grade class! When the parts were announced one boy was thrilled, and the other was disappointed and bitter! The youth minister threw a bone at the disappointed boy by giving him the part of the Inn Keeper.
Instead of accepting his role and congratulating his friend, he planned his revenge. Nothing was said during the rehearsals. He showed up on time and repeated his line, ''Sorry, there's no room in the inn,'' but he was unhappy!
On the night of the play, everything seemed to be going according to script until Joseph knocked on the Inn Keeper's door. ''We'd like a room,'' he said. ''My wife is great pregnant.'' And then the Inn Keeper got his revenge. He said, ''Sure! I have one room left, and it's on the house!''
Joseph stood in the doorway frozen in silence! But, he quickly gathered his wits. He walked in, looked around, and said, ''This place stinks! No wife of mine is staying in a dump like this! Come on Mary, let's go sleep in the barn!''
What happens when your best-laid-plans go up in smoke? How do you handle disappointment when unexpected circumstances ruin your Christmas plans? When Christmas turns blue, what do you do?
We started a new series last week called A Simple Christmas. I suggested that we list the people who mean the most and then do two things: Thank God for bringing them into your life, and tell them how much they mean to you. Say what you need to say while you have the chance!
