Winning Matters (13)

1 Corinthians 9:24-27
Vince Lombardi is an iconic figure in NFL history. He is known not only for his great Packer teams of the 1960s but his leadership. He was a tremendous motivator and teacher. He had an unquenchable desire for success and an unbridled passion for winning. He said...
- Winning isn't everything but making the effort to win is.
- Once a man has made a commitment to a way of life, he puts the greatest strength in the world behind him. It is something we call heart power. Once a man has made this commitment, nothing will stop him short of success.
- Winning isn't everything - it's the only thing.
I don't care what anyone says. Winning does matter.
- Yes, the journey and the lessons we learn in the process matters but let's not downplay the importance of success. Winning matters.
- If you are not going to compete to win...don't compete. Because, if we are not competing to win then we don't work hard nor, do we compete well. Be all in or don't be in.
- I don't buy this new self-esteem saving philosophy that says the only thing that matters is showing up. No! Showing up is good but we compete to win.
Some of you are questioning whether this is a sermon or a coach's pep talk before a game. You may be thinking, ''Pastor, that's not very spiritual and it definitely can't be biblical.'' If you are, then you would be wrong. Making an all-out effort to compete and win is biblical. Winning and success matters. Our problem is that we are too often ''all-in'' on things that don't matter.
The Bible teaches and encourages this ''go for the goal'' mentality when it comes to our spiritual growth and the Gospel ministry. As I read some of Vince Lombardi's quotes on winning, character and leadership I was struck by how closely they paralleled what the Apostle Paul told the Corinthian believers about advancing the Gospel and winning people for Christ.
