1 Thessalonians 3:9-13
A Christmas Story is a 1983 movie based on anecdotes from Jean Shepherd's 1966 book. Ralph Parker looks back to when he was 9-years-old and went by the name of Ralphie, and Ralphie wanted a Red Ryder 200-shot BB gun with a compass in the stock.
That movie cost $3.2 million to produce and it netted a modest $19.3 million in a two-month run in theaters. But in 1985 it aired on HBO and the ratings were very good! In subsequent years it aired on TBS, WGN, and then FOX. In 1989, however, TBS aired it two nights in succession at Thanksgiving, and beginning in 1997 TNT began airing a 24-hour marathon!
The setting is Hohman, IN, a fictionalized version of Hammond, Indiana. The opening scene shows Higbee's Department Store with a crowd of children looking at a window display of gifts. Ralphie scans the gifts in the window and then we hear him say, ''Then I saw the holy grail of Christmas gifts; the Red Ryder 200-shot BB gun!''
That movie revolves around Ralphie's desire to get that BB gun - but there are some other notable scenes:
1. The triple-dog-dare for Flick to lick the pole ...
2. The leg lamp Ralphie's Dad wins in a contest (and his mother ''accidentally'' breaks) ...
3. The Lifebuoy soap that Mrs. Parker uses on Ralphie for swearing ...
4. And the neighbors dogs who eat the turkey on Thanksgiving day, forcing the family to eat out at a Chinese restaurant.
One scene involves Ralphie's teacher, Miss Shields, who assigns an essay: What I Want for Christmas. Ralphie's essay goes like this:
What I want for Christmas is a Red Ryder 200-shot BB gun with a compass in the stock. I think that everybody should have a Red Ryder BB gun. They're very good for Christmas! I don't think a football is a very good Christmas present.
Then Ralphie congratulates himself on his essay:
Rarely had my words poured from my penny pencil with such feverish fluidity! Ralph ...
