Turn with me to 1 Cor. 1. At first glance, it looks like the roll call from the Jerry Springer Hall of Shame.

- You've got people suing each other left and right.

- People getting sloppy drunk at family gatherings.

- Adulterers, prostitutes, homosexuals, thieves, money lovers, and swindlers are everywhere. But that's not even the worst of it.

- There is even someone who is having an affair with his father's wife. (hand over mouth: OH!)

But of course, we're not talking about the Jerry Springer show. Or even Honey Boo Boo for that matter.

What's weird is if you read closely it sounds like a modern day church.

- There are people arguing over who their favorite preacher is.

- People fighting over what real worship is supposed to look like and sound like.

- People claiming that their ministry is more important than all the others.

- And people attending the same church, but don't have a shred of love for one another.

Sounds familiar doesn't it? But we're not talking about a modern day church either.

All of these issues, and much, much more, are found right here in the pages of the letter from the Apostle Paul written to a church in Corinth over 2,000 years ago. I think as we walk through this book over the next several months, you're going to be shocked at how similar the issues that this little church in southern Greece faced so long ago are to the issues that we face today in the church right here in the Bible belt of America.

We're going to see that Paul writes about lawsuits, alcohol problems, sexual immorality, marriage struggles, apathy toward sin, worship wars, and division in the church. And it makes you wonder if the old cliché just might be true: the more things change...the more they stay the same.

Personally, I'm so glad that God preserved this letter, and put it in the cannon of Scriptur ...
