Turn to 1 Cor. 2. In a moment we will look at verses 10-16. It's been well said, ''Any idiot can be complicated; but it takes a genius to be simple.'' Certainly that's hyperbole, but there is some truth to it. One of the well-known acronyms that we were reminded of in seminary often was the K.I.S.S. acronym: ''Keep It Simple Stupid''. Some of you wish I had also been taught 'Keep It Short Stupid', but no such luck.

Well, today I want to try and be as simple, and as plain, and as uncomplicated as possible because we are talking about something of massive importance that every Christian must understand, and yet there seems to be so much confusion on this subject. And that subject is the Person and the role of the Holy Spirit of God. The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity. He is coequal, coeternal, and co-powerful with the Father and the Son. If any one of the three were removed, there would be no God. Just like the Father and the Son, the Holy Spirit has a vital role in the world, in the church, and in the life of every single Christian.

Just a couple of months ago, a very sweet woman from a more Pentecostal, charismatic background came up to me and said, ''Pastor, I'd love to sit down with you some time and tell you how we could get the Holy Spirit to come to this church.'' I just smiled. But I wanted to say, ''If He's not already here then we have no right to call ourselves a church.'' You see, in her mind, there is to be distinct, ecstatic, outward, visible demonstrations of the Spirit as proof that He's here. That's just bad theology and unbiblical thinking. Matter of fact, the fruit or evidence of the Holy Spirit in the life of people is what? Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, and self-control.
