Have you ever wondered what it really means to walk by faith? I mean, this is something we hear in church and in Sunday School a lot, but what does it mean in the real world? You're facing a tough situation or circumstance, you've lost your job and you're almost out of money. You talk with someone at the church and what do they say? ''Well, you've just gotta walk by faith...'' How encouraging! How uplifting! What in the world does that mean? Let's take a moment and look at a biblical example of real faith. READ TEXT
A couple of years ago while I was youth pastoring in Creedmoor, NC, we took a group of youth to King's Dominion. Now, you wanna talk about faith. When we walked in to the park, immediately on our right was this huge tower. Attached to the tower was a steel cable. Attached to the cable was a harness. Harness to hold...pull the cord...fly through the air. FAITH!
In this passage we see Peter walking on the water toward Jesus in an act of faith. Peter's step pictures for us what it means to walk by faith. From this text we see three requirements to walking by faith. Walking by faith...
It requires the courage to take the first step into the unknown: 26-29
You've gotta strap on the harness. You must be willing to take the first step!
What do you fear?
Do you fear failure? What if I don't make enough money? What if I let my husband or my wife or my kids down?
Do you fear commitment? Some guys fear commitment, some men fear their wives!
Do you fear rejection? Do we share the gospel or do we not speak because we're afraid of rejection? Jesus knew He would be rejected.
Do you fear the unknown? Will I get this job? Will I ever get married? Will I graduate? Will I be able to retire?
