This evening we see in Luke 1:67-79 how Jesus is the precise promise kept!
You see, whether you've spent your whole life in the church or have never stepped foot inside the doors of a church building, we've all likely struggled at times to see the unity between the Old and New Testaments of the Bible. Even the most learned of Bible scholars struggle to see how the Old and the New Testaments fit together. But that's part of the beauty of the Christmas story. The Christmas story shows us how all things are unified together, for just as Jesus is the beginning of a new age between God and man, Jesus is also the fulfillment of the old story. Jesus is the answer to every question the Old Testament asks. Jesus is the fulfillment of every prophecy and typology the Old Testament makes. Most specifically, however, this evening, we see how the coming of Jesus is God's keeping of His Holy Covenant.

God swore to His people throughout the Old Testament to redeem them from their sin and rebellion. Luke 1:67-79 shows us how Jesus Christ is the perfect fulfillment of God's oath to His people and the everlasting deliverance of the people for God's own possession.

And so very briefly this evening, as we pause to meditate upon and celebrate Christmas, I want us to see in this prophecy of Zechariah, the father of John the Baptist, how Jesus is the fulfillment of the Old Testament. By way of a brief background to Luke 1:67ff, Zechariah was a priest of Israel whom God had told would have a son. And not only would he and his wife have a son, this son would be the prophet to preceded the Messiah, the Promised Savior of God. Now Zechariah's wife had been barren and they were both old, so when God had told Zechariah that he was going to finally have a child, Zechariah responded, ...
