Pray This Way (1 of 5)
Series: Teach Us to Pray
Bob Ingle
Matthew 6:5-13
Open your bibles to Matthew 6. We're gonna talk about prayer. Let me just tell you right up front, this isn't a guilt sermon series, ok? I know that if I was to walk up to you and ask, ''How's your prayer life?'' No matter how good it is you'd probably say, ''Well, it could be better.'' That's true of all of us. None of pray enough. None of us pray the right way all the time. None of us knows everything about prayer. All of us can improve. That certainly includes me. So my intent for this series is not for you to feel guilty, or feel embarrassed, or feel ashamed about the current status of your prayer life, ok? Actually it's quite the opposite.
As your pastor, I want to understand the awesome privilege of prayer so that you'll be encouraged, you'll be equipped, you'll be informed, you'll be inspired, you'll be prepared, and you'll be passionate. When this series is over I want you to be able to say, ''I know what to pray. I know how to pray. I know why I should pray. And I'm fired up about prayer.'' I hope that will be all of us. All right? I want us all to be praying prayers that we know God is not only hearing, but enjoying, and welcoming, and responding to. Doesn't that sound good? I know it does to me.
Alright, let me start out by giving you a simple definition of prayer. Prayer is simply meaningful, spontaneous, sincere communication with God. What an awesome thought that the God of the universe wants you to talk to Him, and He wants to talk to you. WOW! One of the questions that often comes up with people when it comes to prayer is this: if God knows everything (and He does) and if He controls of everything (and He does) WHY pray? You need to understand the primary and secondary function of prayer.
The primary function of prayer to connect you to God. Yes, God knows everything, but newsflash...you don't. So prayer isn't about informing God about what's going on in you ...
