Praying In the Spirit (3 of 5)
Series: Teach Us to Pray

Ephesians 6:17-20
Open your bibles to Eph. 6. I was talking with a gentleman in our church the other day, and he said, ''Man alive, after listening to the two sermons on prayer so far I wonder if I've ever really prayed in my life.'' Let me repeat what I said at the beginning of the first message. My intent for this series is not for you to feel guilty, or feel embarrassed, or feel ashamed about the current status of your prayer life, ok? It's quite the opposite. I want all of us to understand the awesome privilege of prayer so that you'll be encouraged, you'll be equipped, you'll be informed, you'll be inspired, you'll be prepared, and you'll be passionate. When this series is over I want all of us to say, ''I know what to pray. I know how to pray. I know why I should pray. And I'm fired about prayer.'' Because a church fired up about prayer can be set on fire by the Lord. That's my heart's desire.
Prayer is important because prayer is powerful. C.H. Spurgeon said, ''Prayer moves the arm that moves the world.'' Prayer activates the power of God. God doesn't have to respond to prayer, but He's committed Himself to doing so. If you want to walk in power, you better kneel in prayer. God moves in response to the prayers of His people. We see that over and again in God's Word. God moves in response to the prayers of His people. Now, in order for that to happen, we have to pray with hearts, minds, and lives that are aligned with God. The prayers that get to heaven start in heaven. What that means is that we have to pray in the Spirit.
We see this command to pray in the Spirit in Jude 20-21, ''But you, dear friends, by building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in God's love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life.'' What does it mean to pray in the Spirit? Well, we know that it doesn't mean to pray i ...
