Gideon (6 of 11)
Series: Unlikely Heroes of the Bible
Jim Perdue
Judges 6:8
Intro/Attention
Tonight, we continue our series through the book of Judges entitled, Unlikely Heroes of the Bible. We have seen several heroes step up and answer God's call to service. But we have also seen God's people consistently turn to sin and idolatry. Tonight, we turn our attention to Judges 6-8 and study a judge named Gideon.
There are great abilities that people acquire, cultivate and demonstrate. In the service of God there is one ability that is the greatest ability of all. What is it? Is it sociability, compatibility, accountability, adaptability, or reliability? The greatest ability is availability. If we are not available to God, no matter what other kind of ability we have, it is no good. Ability without availability is a liability. What does availability mean? It means to place one's self totally, absolutely, completely at God's disposal for Him to do anything and everything He wants to do in us, through us, with us, for us, when He chooses. Anything less than that is putting restrictions on God and writing fine print in your commitment contract to Jesus Christ.
The same process is repeated once again. READ 6:1, 6, 11-12, 16 For seven years, God allowed the Midianites and their allies to raid and rob the Israelites, leaving the people in the deepest poverty. About the time of the eighth Midianite invasion, God called a farmer in Manasseh named Gideon to become the deliverer of His people.
More space is devoted to Gideon in the Book of Judges (100 verses) than to any other judge; and Gideon is the only judge whose personal struggles with his faith are recorded.
Gideon is a great encouragement to people who have a hard time believing that God can make anything out of them or do anything with them. Through these three chapters, we see three stages of Gideon's life that reveal much about this judge and teach us some valuable lessons.
