Ephesians 4:25-32
(Video: It's Not About the Nail) Cracks me up every time! Pretty accurate, huh? The fact is marriage brings together two selfish, sinful people with different backgrounds and personalities. Then you sprinkle in some bad habits and interesting idiosyncrasies, add a bunch of high expectations, and then turn up the heat of the trials of daily life. And presto, guess what you have? Conflict. Discord. Disagreement. Friction.
Now, conflict really isn't the problem. It's the way we handle it or mishandle it that usually causes trouble. Right? Thousands of marriages end every year due to 'irreconcilable differences'. But the truth is there really is no such thing as irreconcilable differences there are only irreconcilable people. In other words, there is nothing you can't work through together if you are determined to work on it together. There are no problems too big to solve, just people too small to solve them. Any two people can get along if they'll grow up. The problem isn't incompatibility. The problem is immaturity. We'd have a lot fewer divorces if people had to file--we're divorcing because we're both immature, and we refuse to grow up. Don't you?
Too many of married people move from 'I do' to 'I'm done' because they haven't been able to figure out how to work through the normal, everyday conflicts of life. And then those unresolved clashes and quarrels stack up so high that they seemly become insurmountable. Then couples quit.
General D. MacArthur used to say this to troops at West Point, ''Gentlemen, don't even think of getting married until you've mastered the art of warfare.'' Well, I wouldn't go that far, but I do think every husband and wife needs to understand some basic, biblical principles the Lord gives us that we have to implement to work through the bumps and bruises that are caused by our spouse.
