Hearts On Fire

Luke 24:13-34
Open your bibles to Luke 24. Has anything ever happened to you, and you thought later to yourself, 'I never saw that coming.' In our new members class, Discover Harvester, I always tell the story of the very first time I preached a sermon...over 20 years ago. I can't put into words the terror I felt in my soul that morning! I felt so overwhelmed and underprepared. The night before I asked my wife to read my sermon, and when she was done I said, ''Well, what do you think?'' She said, ''It's ok.'' High praise indeed. When we got to the church, the pianist who was approximately 137 years old asked me what songs we were going to sing. I said, ''Oh mam, I don't know. I'm the preacher.'' She said, ''Well Sonny, around here the guy who does the preachin' leads the singin.'' I think I wet myself right there. I didn't see that coming at all. Afterward, I asked Jana what she thought of my sermon. She said, ''It was better on paper.'' Ha! I didn't see that coming either.
Some things we don't see coming are really difficult: divorce, death of a loved one, loss of a job, health struggles. Sometimes unforeseen things are unexpected blessings: a new baby we didn't think we'd have, a promotion we didn't think we'd get, cancer that is healed completely, husbands who do their own laundry.
Well, Easter Day 2,000 years ago, was a surprise NO ONE saw coming. And we're going to see how the real Jesus and His real resurrection changed everything for two guys who'd lost all hope. Luke 24:13-34 (READ).
V13 tells us on the first Easter afternoon these two guys were headed which direction? It's says they are walking to Emmaus from Jerusalem. Guess where the cross is? Jerusalem. Guess where the empty tomb is? Jerusalem. Guess where the rest of the followers of Jesus are? Jerusalem. They aren't just walking away from Jerusalem to Emmaus. They are walking away from the cross. They are walking away from the empty tomb. They are walking awa ...
