GOD'S GIFTS OF GRACE

1 Corinthians 12.10
October 27, 2002
Tonight... we are unwrapping the last two sign
gifts... so take God's Word and join me in 1
Corinthians 12.10. We are thinking tonight about The
Bible and the Gift of Tongues.
As you well know... this grace gift has caused
more confusion and chaos among believers than all the
other gifts. Some say it is a gift for today's church.
Others say it was a temporary gift intended for the
establishment of the church.
Well... as with all Spiritual gifts... keep in
mind the five-fold test that Jonathan Edwards used in
validating the use of spiritual gifts for today:
1. The Bible Test. Does this gift take away or
add to or ignore what the Bible teaches?
2. The Jesus Test. Does it bring glory to Jesus?
Does it honor Jesus? Does it put Jesus in the spot
light?
3. The Character Test. Is the fruit of the Spirit
evident? Does it change or make a person more like
Jesus?
4. The Decency and Order Test. God is not honored
by confusion and division.
5. The Evangelism Test. Is the purpose and goal
to bring the lost to Christ? We are here to win lost
people to Jesus and glorify God!
Well... when it comes to the gift of tongues...

what the charismatics say nor what Ernest Easley
says... not even what the Baptist say! The question to
ask is: What does the Bible say?
Beginning in 1 Corinthians 12.10 we read, "... to
another different kinds of tongues, to another the
interpretation of tongues."
Last Sunday as we considered The Particulars of
this Gift... we saw that the word translated "kinds" in
verse 10 speaks of genealogy... nationalities...
offspring and family. That tells us that the gift of
tongues has something to do with different
nationalities.
We also learned that the Greek word translated
"tongues" can ...
