CIT - Mark describes the power of Jesus as he begins he earthly ministry.
Proposition - Christians today can faith in the power of Jesus over the troubles and trials of life.

INTRODUCTION:

1. FIRST, WE SEE HIS POWER TO CALL MEN- VS. 18-20
In vs. 14 and 15 We find that Jesus has begun His public ministry of preaching and teaching. He has already had His first run in with the Pharisees and after John the Baptist's imprisonment has began to preach in Galilee. In fact, the Galilean cities of Capernaum, Bethsaida, Corazin, and Cana will become the locus of Jesus' ministry. In fact, the majority of His 33 recorded miracles and most of teaching will be issued in this area. So it would seem natural that Jesus would Call out His first disciples from this area.

A. They were ordinary men - vs. 16

Simon and Andrew, James and John. They will make up the inner circle of Jesus closest friends and confidants.

As fishermen they worked hard each day for their lively hood. Their hands were callused and strong, their faces worn by the wind and the sun. Their days began early and ended late. They were simple folk. Just as the other disciples would be.

''It was as if Jesus said, Give me 12 ordinary men and with them, if they will give themselves to me, I will change the world.'' William Barclay. This is still true today!

Notice - When he called them they were just going about the business of life. They were cleaning their nets. Pulling out pebbles and sticks and mending the rips. Doing a days work. Jesus steps up and says ''follow me!''

ILLUS: Amos 7:14-15
14 Then Amos answered, and said to Amaziah:
''I was no prophet,
Nor was I a son of a prophet,
But I was a sheepbreeder
And a tender of sycamore fruit.
15 Then the Lord took me as I followed the flock,
And the Lord said to me,
'Go, prophesy to My people Israel.'
