PROPOSITION: The distinctives of religion vs. a relationship with Jesus.

INTRODUCTION:One of the strangest and saddest features of Jesus' life was the religious opposition He encountered. This passage contains 3 of what are 5 conflict stories. Conflict between the Pharisees and Jesus.

As we look at this battle we learn the important distinctions between Jesus and religion. Everybody has a religion of some kind, but not everybody has Jesus.Religion is man's attempt to reach God, Jesus is God reaching out to man.Religion is man working to please God, Jesus is the pleasure of God.Religion focuses on rules and regulations. Jesus is all about freedom and life.

It's possible to be religious and be saved. On the other hand, It's possible to have religion and not have salvation. It is possible to be a Baptist or Pentecostal or Assembly and not have Jesus. You can sit quietly and reverently in your pew Sunday morning and not know Jesus. You run jump your pew and speak in tongues and not know Jesus.

ILLUS: To a man who was very religious, Jesus said, ''you must be born again''.

I) RELIGION IS PRIDEFUL/ JESUS IS COMPASSIONATE-VS. 14-17

The setting is the calling of Matthew. He is a Tax collector, and sitting at his toll office. He charged import duties on wares brought through the town. Tax collectors were considered collaborators with the Roman government, traitors to Israel, and despised by religious people. They were excommunicated from the synagogue and considered a disgrace to their families and communities.He is called-He drops everything, a good job, security, leaves it all to follow Jesus! The first thing Matthew does is arrange a feast in Jesus' honor. All his rowdy friends were there. Tax collectors and sinners. The scum of the city in the eyes of the Pharisee ...
