CIT: Jesus calms the stroms

PROPOSITION: The power of Jesus gives us safety in the storms of life.

INTORDUCTION:

Tropical Storm Bill landed this week in Texas, we got a lot of rain. We've learned to live with storms.

Let's look closely at our passage for this morning.

This has been a busy day for Jesus. His day started in vs, 20 and has just now been brought to a close.

He has dealt with the Pharisees, and taught all day long. Now Jesus is exhausted. He gets into a ship and goes to sleep.

In this passage we find a miracle of nature. Critics say this is not a historical fact, only an allegory told to prove a point, but it is a historical reality. It illustrates to us that what Jesus is able to do in the physical realm He is also able to do in the Spiritual realm.

This particular miracle is an illustration of life. A picture of life as voyage on the sea. Storms will come! We will find three principles to guide us as we ride through the storms of life with the ruler of the waves.

It is a pleasant afternoon most likely. A day spent in the hard work of the ministry for the disciples and Jesus. The drain has taken its toll on the savior. He needs a break, he needs a rest.

We want to stop here and see the humanity of Christ-He knows what it is to be tired.

ILLUS: I have been tired in the work lately, this is a gold mine of comfort to me.

He understands what it is to be hungry, worn-out, out-cast, spit upon. He knows us.

But there arose a fierce gale of wind. A storm was on the way. Such storms were fairly common on the Sea of Galilee. Being the seasoned sailors you would have expected to them to be ready for this.

Just like life isn't it. We need to understand the terrain of life. It is full of storms, unexpected and dangerous. We all have storms to face.
