CIT - Ritual and religion are unable to cleanse a defiled heart
Proposition: Legalistic religion cannot make us right with God.

Question: Why Not?

INTRODUCTION: On April 20, 2013 NYPD officers raided a drug den in a Brooklyn, New York neighborhood. The police found a crew of five men in possession of 23,000 pills of oxycodone with a street value of $460,000. Apparently the men had used stolen prescription sheets to obtain the drugs. They were also accused of peddling heroin and cocaine and possessing a sawed-off shotgun.But there was an interesting twist to this story: the men routinely texted their customers that they were closed for the Sabbath. One text read: ''We are closing at 7:30 on the dot and will reopen Saturday 8:15 so if u need anything you have 45 mins to get what you want.'' That explains why police officers dubbed their year-long investigation into the group ''Only After Sundown.''Erik Badia and Tina Moore, ''Group of observant Brooklyn drug dealers told customers they were closed for Shabbat,'' New York Daily News(9-10-13)

It seems they were missing something doesn't it. Simply being religious on Sunday does not make a person right with God.

Jesus is dealing with a group of men that had something of the same problem. Not selling drugs, or breaking the law, but they were covering up their sin and empty hearts with religious activity. They were hypocrites.

Jesus is going to answer a question that is important to all of us this morming, What can't religion and ritual make us right with God? A legalist is someone who puts their emphasis on the outward. They are very religious. But, Jesus first shows us that Legalism produce hypocrites, not disciples. Then he shows us that legalism misses the whole point. The source of defilement is not what is outside of us, or even what we do. The problem is inside of us.
