Mark 7:31-37
CIT - Jesus heals the deaf and mute man.
Proposition - Jesus's healing of this man provides principles for effective gospel-centered ministry.
INTRODUCTION: This passage begins with a geographical notation about our Lord's journey through southern Lebanon. If you look at a Bible map, you see that Jesus was actually taking the long way home. Bible students have speculated about why He took such a long route to get to where he was going. I think He was taking this period of time to train his disciples. It was a kind of walking seminar. On this long journey, which probably took about eight months, Jesus was teaching his disciples. What He was teaching them? The basics of ministry. So, for a few minutes this morning let's take our first class in Jesus' school of ministry. nThere are 4 subjects to be covered in this class. Each subject could easily have it's separate course of study, but in our passage we have an overview. This is what we would call a survey class. In this passage we find 4 principles of a Jesus centered ministry. 4 principles that ought to be present in our Church, in every family here, and in our own individual lives. What are they?
THE FIRST PRINCIPLE IS COMPASSION - Who are ''they?'' We don't know. We do know they were concerned for their friend and had compassion on him. They brought him to Jesus. He could not have brought himself. They had to take the initiative.
HIS PHYSICAL CONDITION - He could not hear, he could barely speak. He would not have been able to take care of himself. Today such a person could lead a happy and productive life. Not in Jesus day. He had hope of being cured. No chance for a better life. They cared enough that they brought him to Jesus and then begged Jesus to heal him. Who are you concerned about? Whose name do you mention in prayer before God?
