Mark 9:1-13
CIT: Jesus encourages His disciples by giving them a preview of His Second Coming.
PROPOSITION: This preview of Jesus second coming should encourage us to be fully committed disciples of Jesus Christ.
INTRODUCTION:
Background: This is one of the most remarkable occurrences in the life of Christ. 6 days after Peter's confession and Jesus call to discipleship. Takes us back to the OT where Moses prepared himself for 6 days before God revealed himself. In fact, this story is full of OT images.
THE MEN-Vs. 2 These three men shared a special relationship with Jesus. This was His inner circle.
They were with Him when He raised Jarius' daughter. Mark 5:37 They were with Him in Gerthsemane-Mark 14:33 What do we know about them? Peter makes the great confession, John is the disciple that Jesus loves, and James is the first martyr in Acts 12. Does Jesus show favoritism? ''This does not mean that Jesus loved them more, but it seems these three perhaps were more receptive to Him. Jesus' discipleship method was to spend the most time with the ones who had the deepest level of commitment!
GOD REVEALS HIMSELF THE MOST TO THOSE WHO ARE MOST RECEPTIVE!
We can be as near to Jesus as we want to be! We can be in His inner circle! You might say you would like to have such a relationship with Jesus. You might like to be a part of his inner circle. How? James 4:8-Draw near to God and He will draw near to you!
THE MOUNTAIN-This is most probably Mt. Hermon. 9,000 feet in height. They went there by themselves. Jesus had a habit of retiring to a quiet solitary place to pray. Often Mountains.
Such times of withdrawing are often times when God reveals Himself to us. When God gives us a fresh and encouraging word. Ex. 24-God gives the law to Moses on Mt. Sinai 1 Kings 19-God reveals Himself to Elijah on Mt. Horeb and then on Mt. Carmel. Fresh visions of Christ, encouraging moments with the ...
