A boy was watching his father, a pastor, write a sermon. ''How do you know what to say?'' he asked. ''Why, God tells me.'' ''Oh, then why do you keep crossing things out?''* Let me simply say, I know the feeling! I have labored over this sermon all week long as I sought the face of God for a word for His people today. So this morning, I want to talk to you about One Thing. I know what you're thinking, ''the pastor's only going to talk about one thing, that's great, we might get out of here early today.'' No, my subject today is One Thing, but I'll have a few things to say about One Thing.

The truth is, that there is only one thing that keeps most people from giving their heart and life to Jesus Christ. That one thing may be different when you talk to different people, but if you ask them and see, most of the time just one thing keeps a person from letting go and trusting God with their lives.

This is true of the man in our story today. He's known as the ''Rich Young Ruler'' who came so close to giving all to Christ, but one thing held him back. READ

This rich young ruler may be the only man in the Gospels who came to the feet of Jesus and went away in worse condition than when He came. He was moral and religious, earnest and sincere and probably would have qualified for membership in the average church. But because of one thing in his life, his wealth, he refused to follow Jesus Christ and instead, went his own way in great sorrow. (Wiersbe)

We need to ask ourselves this question, what is the one thing in my life that keeps me from giving my all to Christ? I want you to notice several truths about this rich young ruler that we must be sure to apply to our lives as well.
