Team Jesus - Loyalty (4 of 4)
Series: Team Jesus
Steve Jones
I Corinthians 12
MESSAGE SUMMARY: For a church to have great teamwork it needs loyalty. In I Corinthians 12 Paul breaks loyalty down as follows:
1) Loyalty values 21-22
2) Loyalty protects 23-24
3) Loyalty supports 25-27
INTRODUCTION: With one out in the top of the ninth inning of World Series Game 5 (10.29.17), Dodgers' Yasiel Puig launched a one-handed homer to left, cutting Houston's lead to just one and sparking a three-run rally that sent an already-bananas affair into extra innings. The real drama, however, unfolded moments later out in the left-field bleachers After one Astros fan came away with Puig's homer, another Astros fan reached over, grabbed it out of her hand and threw it back onto the field in one of the fiercest displays of home-team loyalty in baseball history. The woman who caught the ball is Sarah Head -- while the man who threw her souvenir away is her brother-in-law, Kirk Head. Kirk explained he knew before the game even began that any Dodgers homer he got his hands on was getting the Wrigley Field treatment. Which was all fine, according to Sarah -- she was just upset that she didn't have the chance to do it herself. (YouTube video)
For great team-work there has to be loyalty. We're in a sermon series entitled ''Team Jesus'' wherein we're exploring the importance of teamwork in the church. In I Corinthians 12 Paul addresses the teamwork, or lack thereof, in the Corinthian church. He doesn't use that word but the concept is definitely there. So far, we've learned that a great team requires a great coach. ''Team Jesus'' has a great coach in, well, Jesus! Secondly a great team must have a great identity forged through a common experience. For ''Team Jesus'' that identity is found in the common experience of baptism. Thirdly, we saw the importance of ''chemistry'' on a team and today it's all about loyalty.
