Isaiah 40:31, Genesis 12:21

Following World War 2, Allied forces found the following message scribbled on the wall of an abandoned house: I believe in the sun, even when it doesn't shine. I believe in love, even when it isn't shown. I believe in God, even when He is silent.

The authenticity of our faith is severely tested when God is silent. And our faith is tested in a variety of ways. Sometimes adversity provides the test. Jesus said, ''In this world you will have tribulation.'' Sometimes prosperity tests us. Thomas Carlisle once said, ''For every one hundred men who can handle adversity, only one can handle prosperity.'' And sometimes temptation tests us. Paul reminds us that, ''No temptation has taken you except what is common to man.''

One of the most difficult tests to pass comes when God seems unresponsive to our needs. Do you trust God when promises aren't fulfilled quickly? Do you obey God when His commands don't pay off? Do you believe in God - even when he is silent?

That's difficult to do in an impatient world. I heard about a man who dreamed he had a conversation with God. He spoke to God saying, ''Is it true that a minute to us is like 1,000 years to you?'' And God nodded, yes. ''Is it true that a penny to us is like a million dollars to you?'' Again, God nodded, yes. ''Since that's true, could I have a penny?'' And God said, ''In just a minute.''

Most of us ... no matter how long we have known God, no matter how often we pray, no matter what version of the Bible we read, no matter how golden our effort is to love others ... most of us have fallen prey to the god of impatience.

We live in a 24-7 world on steroids! We're used to instant results and we expect immediate solutions. We no longer email, we text. We apply for same-day-loans, get 10-minute oil changes, order reading glasses while we wait, and we sit in front of a gas fireplace with a remote TV control in our hands.
