Galatians 4:21-31
Open to Galatians 4. Most biblical commentators regard the passage we are about to study as the most difficult in the entire book of Galatians. It's quite deep and complex. And the reason it's so difficult to understand is because Paul presupposes some things about his readers. He presupposes you have a broad and comprehensive understanding of the Old Testament. He presupposes you know and understand fully the stories of Abraham, Sarah, Ishmael, and Isaac. He assumes you know the historical significance of Jerusalem and Mt. Sinai. He also assumes that his readers are deeply engrossed in what he has to say, and are hanging on his every word. That's a lot of assumptions and presumptions isn't it?
But today, as I teach through this text, I can't really assume any of that. I know that many of you don't have a good grasp of the Old Testament. Many of you don't know the fully story of Abraham, Sarah, Ishmael, and Isaac. You're probably not hanging on every word Paul has to say. But I do hope you are at least interested in understanding him. So, this is a challenging text no doubt. But one of the ways we grow spiritually strong as a church is not to always suck on the sugar sticks of Scripture, but also chew on the more meatier passages of God's Word. So we're going to push away milk and move on to the meat today, ok? Are you ready?
Well, today we're going to talk about 'Who's yo Momma?' We've all heard the little phrase used 'Who's your daddy?' And spiritually speaking, Paul's already addressed that in this letter. He has said that no matter who you are Jew/Gentile, free/slave, man/woman, circumcised or not circumcised, if you've placed your faith in Jesus Christ you are without a doubt a son of Abraham. Abraham is the spiritual father of all Christians.
Galatians 3:7 says, ''Therefore know that only those who are of faith are sons of Abraham.'' But what is even more excit ...
