Jesus: The Answer to Life's Question
Robert Dawson
John 18:28-38
Growing up I was always told, ''There is no such thing as a bad question.'' Questions help us learn and grow. Inquisitive minds should be encouraged. I believed that until I reached Mrs. McCrary's 7th grade English class at LMS. It was then I learned not every question was a good question, nor was every question celebrated. She hated what she considered to be ''asinine superfluous questions.'' Translated into every-day language that means, ''stupid and unnecessary questions.'' She delighted in pointing them out before the class. Unfortunately, I seemed to be full of them. If I heard it once I heard it a hundred times that year, ''Robert, that is an asinine superfluous question.'' So, I learned there are bad questions or at least unwanted and unnecessary questions.
Today, I want us to consider a question that is not unnecessary but necessary. It is one of the great questions in all of Scripture. It is one of the most important questions in all of life and we read about it in John's Gospel.
Just to make sure you know where we are in the story...
-Jesus has been betrayed by Judas, arrested, denied by Peter and found guilty in an illegal kangaroo court by the Jewish leaders and High Priest because they were bent on having Him put to death that very day.
- Since they did not have the authority to put someone to death, they were under Roman rule, they approached Pilate who was the very unpopular Roman Governor over Jerusalem.
As we look at Jesus' interaction with Pilate, who is trying to determine if Jesus has done anything deserving of death, we hear one of life's most important questions, a question that is not ''asinine superfluous.'' I want us to wrestle with this question. It may not be one with which you are currently wrestling but chances are it is one you have wrestled with. It is a question that the unbelieving world around us grapples with every day.
