John 18-19

This morning in our study of John's gospel... we move from chapter 17 into chapter 18. And in doing so... we leave a loving setting into a legal setting! In chapter 17 we read of the supplication of Jesus. In chapter 18 we read of the interrogation of Jesus.

While Jesus was praying... the religious crowd was plotting and beginning in chapter 18... they arrest the Lord Jesus in order to put Him on trial which would end with a pre-determined verdict: Guilty as charged!

In fact... Jesus really went through four trials: two Jewish and two Roman and all four trials were a mockery of Justice! In fact... if you take a close look at these trials... you will find that all four of them were illegal!

Well... beginning in chapter 18... John records the arrest of Jesus and we read in verse 12, ''Then the detachment of troops and the captain and the officers of the Jews arrested Jesus and bound Him.''

Verse 13, ''And they led Him away to Annas first...'' So who was Annas? He was the head muckedy- muck of all of the Priest! In fact... he had such influence that historian Josephus records that five of his sons... not to mention his son-in-law served as the High Priest in unbroken succession.

He was so respected throughout the religious community... that years after he filled the office of ''high priest''... he was still referred to as the ''high priest.''

We read in verse 19, ''The high priest then asked Jesus about His disciples and His doctrine.'' I wonder what Annas asked about His disciples? Perhaps he asked Jesus about the loyalty of Judas Iscariot? Perhaps he asked Jesus about the disciple standing not far from him who had just denied knowing Jesus. Perhaps he asked about the rest of the disciples who had deserted Him!

We are simply not told... but apparently Jesus ignored the question! But not only His disciples... Annas asked Jesus about His doctrine.
